The lifespan of CBN inserts depends not only on the tool itself, but also on the rigidity of the machine tool, clamping stability, tool holder system, and whether the insert grade and cutting parameters are matched. If any part of the system is unstable, abnormal wear, chipping, or a significant reduction in lifespan will occur.

Adjustments can be made in two aspects: cutting parameters and tool structure. Prioritize increasing the cutting speed and reducing the feed rate. At the same time, optimize the tool rake angle and, if necessary, use round inserts or a forming scheme more suitable for intermittent cutting to reduce impact and stabilize cutting.

The chipping problem can be improved by chamfering/grinding the cutting edge, reducing the cutting speed, increasing the rigidity of the system, pre-chamfering the intermittent cutting parts, and optimizing the cutting speed.

Improvements can be made in four aspects: cutting angle, cutting method, cooling conditions, and cutting parameters. Prioritize reducing the tool entry angle to below 20°, use conventional milling as much as possible, avoid using coolant, and appropriately increase the cutting speed to reduce the risk of rake face impact and thermal cracking.

Severe chipping of the cutting edge is usually related to excessive cutting load, insufficient tool rigidity, mismatch between the cutting edge/tool ​​tip selection, or unstable clamping. When addressing this, first reduce the depth of cut and cutting speed, then optimize the tool tip radius and cutting edge treatment, and pay close attention to the insert installation, center height, and clamping surface condition.
