CBN Insert Selection for High-Temperature Alloy Semi-Finishing and Finishing

UHD provides CBN insert selection support for semi-finishing and finishing Inconel 718, GH4169, and other high-temperature alloys. Match coated brazed CBN inserts for relatively continuous cutting or integral brazed CBN inserts for interrupted machining, casting defects, and impact-prone conditions.

Inconel 718, GH4169 and similar high-temperature alloys retain high strength at elevated temperatures, tend to work-harden, and transfer heat inefficiently. During semi-finishing and finishing, heat can concentrate at the cutting edge, increasing the risk of rapid wear, edge chipping, unstable surface quality and dimensional variation.

For turbocharger rotors, aerospace housings and cast alloy components, CBN insert selection should consider more than material grade. Cutting continuity, blank surface condition, impact level, allowance and setup rigidity together determine whether wear resistance or impact resistance should take priority. UHD supports this process with application-oriented selection of Coated CBN Insert and Integral Brazed CBN Insert Series structures.

High-Temperature Alloy CBN Insert Selection Guide

Material Hardness Typical Workpiece Machining Condition Recommended Insert Series + Grade Vc (m/min) f (mm/r) ap (mm) Selection Notes
High-temperature alloy (Inconel 718/GH4169, aged HRC35–45; some parts HRC45–58) Turbocharger rotors, aerospace housings Semi-finishing / finishing; difficult-to-machine materials Composite Brazed CBN Insert Series (coated) → UPN603 50–90 0.05–0.10 0.1–0.3 Good hot hardness. Use constant speed and feed where possible to reduce the effect of work hardening on cutting stability.
High-temperature alloy (Inconel 718/GH4169, aged HRC35–45; some parts HRC45–58) Cast high-temperature alloy parts with surface defects Heavy interrupted cutting Integral Brazed CBN Insert Series → USN100 40–70 0.06–0.12 0.1–0.4 Higher impact resistance for casting defects, local hard spots and interrupted cutting impact.

The parameters above are reference ranges for high-temperature alloy semi-finishing and finishing. Confirm them through trial cuts based on machine rigidity, clamping stability, allowance, coolant conditions, tool overhang and surface defects.

Match the Insert Structure to the Actual Cutting Condition

Relatively Continuous Cutting: UPN603

For stable allowances and relatively continuous finishing of rotors or aerospace housings, UPN603 is suited to applications focused on consistent high-temperature cutting, dimensional control and surface finish. Start with light feed and depth of cut, and maintain a steady cutting rhythm to limit edge-load fluctuation caused by work hardening.

Cast Surfaces and Heavy Interruption: USN100

Where oxide scale, sand inclusions, hard spots, porosity edges or uneven stock create repeated impact, USN100 provides a more impact-oriented option. Use a lower cutting speed than for stable finishing, assess defect distribution and stock variation before machining, and avoid aggressive initial settings on an unstable setup.

Implementation Priorities for Difficult-to-Machine Alloy Turning

  • Identify the source of cutting load first: distinguish continuous cutting from strong interruption, and evaluate the blank surface before choosing the insert structure.
  • Adjust parameters in small, traceable steps: avoid changing speed, feed and depth of cut substantially at the same time, so the cause of wear, chipping or dimensional change can be identified.
  • Verify with the complete production setup: record material condition, clamping, insert wear, cutting parameters and finished dimensions during trial cutting before batch implementation.

Application Scope and Process Support

This guidance applies to turning operations for semi-finishing and finishing high-temperature alloys. It is not a substitute for process evaluation in roughing, large stock removal, severely unstable clamping conditions, complex profiles or applications with special cooling requirements.

For non-standard profiles, special machine interfaces or demanding production cycles, Henan UHD Ultrahard Tools Co., Ltd can support CBN insert selection, non-standard tool adaptation and cutting-parameter review according to the material condition and actual machining environment.
