This solution is designed for general transmission and gearbox gears made from materials such as 20CrMnTi and 40Cr, after carburizing and hardening to HRC58–64.

Bores and shoulders are often functional locating surfaces. Their diameter, roundness and concentricity must remain controlled throughout a production batch.
Relief grooves, keyways and sealing grooves require repeatable width, bottom radius and sidewall form. General turning inserts are not always suited to controlled forming.
