UHD Application and Selection Guide
UHD integral brazed CBN inserts are developed for hard turning and high-load batch machining. The correct insert should be selected according to the workpiece material, cutting continuity, required accuracy, machine rigidity, clamping condition and cutting parameters—not by insert geometry or grade alone.
An integral brazed CBN insert combines a CBN cutting tip with a carbide substrate through a double-sided vacuum-welding process. The structure is intended to provide a more stable connection between the CBN material and the substrate in high-temperature, high-load and selected interrupted-cutting conditions.
Compared with conventional single-sided or high-frequency welded structures, the double-sided design provides two usable cutting sides. This can help increase edge utilization, reduce tool-change frequency and support more controlled tooling consumption in batch production. The actual result depends on the workpiece, machine condition, cutting parameters and application setup.
Confirm whether the material is alloy cast iron, gray cast iron, ductile iron or hardened steel, and consider its hardness, structure and surface condition.
Evaluate continuous or interrupted cutting, cutting depth, feed, cutting speed, impact load and the possibility of thermal shock.
Match the insert and process to roughing, semi-finishing or finishing. High-precision small-hole boring and superfinishing require different tooling solutions.
Check machine rigidity, holder compatibility, workpiece clamping, runout and stability before introducing the insert into batch production.
| Grade | Main Characteristics | Recommended Conditions | Typical Materials | Typical Operations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USN100 | Wear resistance and impact resistance | High-speed continuous or interrupted cutting | Alloy cast iron, gray cast iron and ductile iron | Roughing and semi-finishing |
| USN200 | Wear resistance and heat resistance | High-speed continuous cutting | Alloy cast iron, gray cast iron and ductile iron | Semi-finishing and finishing |
| USN650 | Wear resistance and impact resistance | High-speed continuous cutting | Hardened steel, including bearing steel, die steel and tool steel | Semi-finishing or finishing |
The grade recommendations above are a starting point. Final selection should be confirmed against the actual workpiece hardness, cutting continuity, machine setup and target surface requirements.
Brake discs, flywheels and clutch pressure plates.
Cylinders, upper bearings and crankshafts.
Machining of various hardened bearing and gear components.
Selected components used in wind power and engineering machinery.
Integral brazed CBN inserts can be used on conventional CNC lathes and hard-turning machines with moderate equipment rigidity requirements. Stable clamping and a suitable holder remain important because vibration, runout and workpiece movement can accelerate edge chipping or cause inconsistent results.
